With a coastline of over 125 km and a exclusive economic zone of more than 40,000 km2, Quang Nam is a province with great potential for developing marine fishing and marine economy. Cham Islands has its unique ecosystems including diverse and abundant coral reefs and marine species of high economic value. It is also a national marine reserve and a world biosphere reserve. In the development plan of Chu Lai Open Economic Zone, the coastal area and Truong Giang River adjacent area, from the east of Chu Lai airport to Tam Ky city and extending to Hoi An will develope eco-tourist resorts and environmental - friendly traditional craft villages.

With these strengths, the Prime Minister has approved the revised master plan for the development of Chu Lai Open Economic Zone in the central province of Quang Nam to 2035 with a vision to 2050. Chu Lai Port is expected to become type I port (national port) which is an international transit hub, serving international trade and exchange activities. There will be new route from Cua Lo to wharves of Tam Hiep, Tam Hoa and Ky Ha to ensure the reception of ships with a tonnage from 30,000 tons to 50,000 tons.

However, the marine economic potential of Quang Nam province has not been fully effective because the province is often affected by natural disasters, causing heavy losses of lives and property. The estuarial areas of Quang Nam province often face the risks of sedimentation, erosion and flooding as well as salt intrusion. Thuyloi University has been assigned to take main responsible unit for research with topic "Studying and proposing solutions to train Truong Giang River in Nui Thanh district for sustainable economic development” under bilateral and multilateral research cooperation programs on science and technology of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

On the afternoon of 26 May 2020, the seminar on Truong Giang River training solution and Chu Lai Port development plan was held at Thuyloi University with the participation of a delegation from Quang Nam province led by Mr. Le Tri Thanh, Chairman of Provincial People's Committee of Quang Nam and representatives of Maritime Construction Consulting Joint Stock Company.

Scientists present reports at the seminar

At the seminar, the scientists presented and clarified the hydrodynamic regime and the morphological changes of the Truong Giang River and the estuarial areas as well as the details of the Chu Lai Port master plan to 2020 with the vision to 2030.

Currently, the task "Studying and proposing solutions to train Truong Giang River and Nui Thanh district for sustainable economic development" has completed data collection, topographic and hydrographic surveys, setting up a modern mathematical modeling tools for studying hydrodynamic regimes and morphological changes in Truong Giang River and Cua Lo area; analyzing and assessing the causes, mechanisms and factors affecting the development of the Truong Giang river bed and Cua Lo area. It is expected that in the coming time, the research team will propose solutions to train Truong Giang River and Cua Lo area to meet the needs of flood drainage, waterway transport and sustainable economic development.
