Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Viet Appointed as President of Thuyloi University

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Viet, former Vice Presient of Thuyloi University, has been officially appointed as President for the term of the University Council (4th tenure, 2020–2025).

Minister Mr. Do Duc Duy (Ministry) of Agriculture and Environment, signed Decision No. 889/QĐ-BNNMT recognizing Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Viet as the new President of Thuyloi University for the 2020–2025 term. The decision took effect on May 1, 2025.

Born in 1974 in Vinh Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district, Nghe An province, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Viet is regarded as one of Vietnam’s leading experts in the field of hydraulic construction engineering.

Coming from a poor background, he overcame many hardships to pursue his education. In 1993, he was admitted to Thuyloi University, majoring in Hydraulic Construction Engineering. During his studies, he achieved numerous academic distinctions, including First Prize in the Mechanics Olympiad (Strength of Materials) in 1996 and Second Prize in the Soil Mechanics Olympiad in 1997.

After graduating from class 35C1, he earned his Doctorate at Tohoku University in Japan—one of the nation’s top seven multidisciplinary universities.

Upon returning to Vietnam, he joined the teaching staff at Thuyloi University in 2007 and has since been invited to speak at prestigious international conferences. He has also been part of research groups that received several awards both domestically and internationally, such as the High Application Research Paper Award at the 19th National Conference on Fluid Mechanics in 2017.

He was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2011 and was promoted to Professor in 2018. Throughout his career, he has held key positions such as Secretary of the Professor Council in Hydraulic Engineering and member of the State Professor Council.

In 2014, he was invited by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) to conduct research and collaboration at a Japanese university and was appointed to the Executive Committee of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research – Asia Pacific Division (IAHR-APD), as well as the Asia-Pacific Advisory Committee of the Coastal Engineering Division (APAC).

Since 2019, he has served as a member of the State Professor Council in the field of Hydraulic Engineering. Notably, in 2022, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Viet received the Outstanding International Collaboration Award from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE).

With over 20 years of dedication to research and education in the field, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Viet has made substantial contributions to Vietnam’s hydraulic sector. He is recognized as a “bridge” between Vietnam and Japan in hydraulic engineering, particularly through joint training and research programs with Tohoku University and JSCE.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Viet has also actively promoted the development of new academic programs at Thuyloi University to meet societal needs and technological advancements. He proposed and implemented disciplines such as Robotics and Intelligent Control Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science—broadening educational and research opportunities for students in cutting-edge fields.

On April 21, at the 29th Party Congress of Thuyloi University, he was elected Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the university for the 2025–2030 term.

Accordingly, from May 1, 2025, following the retirement of Prof. Dr. Trinh Minh Thu, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Viet officially assumes the position of President of Thuyloi University.
