Application of science and technology in natural disaster prevention and mitigation

On the afternoon of June 11, 2020 Thuyloi University worked with Deputy Minister Le Quoc Doanh and departments of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) about application of science and technology in natural disaster prevention and mitigation.

Attending the meeting, on the side of MARD, there were Mr. Le Quoc Doanh, Deputy Minister; Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, Director of Department of Science, Technology and Environment; Mr. Nguyen Truong Son, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Disaster Management Authority; Mr. Luong Van Anh, Deputy General Director of the Directorate of Water Resources; Mr. Duong Tien Chung, Deputy Director of Department of Construction Management and other representatives of some ministry departments, offices and institutes under MARD.

On the side of Thuyloi University, there were Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Kim, Secretary of the Party Committee,  Chairman of the University Council; Prof. Dr. Trinh Minh Thu, President; and other representatives of the rector board, departments, faculties and techonology scientific  units.

At the meeting, Prof. Dr. Trinh Minh Thu, the President introduced the highlights of Thuyloi University. He emphasized that besides scientific research projects serving production, the university also promotes international publications. Since 2014, the university's researcher have published nearly 370 articles in prestigious international specialized scientific journals on the list of ISI and Scopus. Thuyloi University ranked 18 among national institutes in term of the most international publication in 2019.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Canh Thai, Vice President presented a report on advanced technological solutions in natural disaster prevention. He said that the university had many interdisciplinary research groups focusing on data analysis, big data, detailed statistics, driving forces of AI global climate models; forecasting and warning of floods, floods, droughts and saltwater intrusion on large rivers; studying the evolution of sedimentation, coastal bank erosion and solution of prevention works; practising on computers to improve the capacity of natural disaster prevention and mitigation.

According to Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Kim, Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the University Council, the demand for high-quality human resources for science and technology activities, especially in the field of natural disaster prevention is increasing, so it is necessary to mobilize the participation of experts and scientists, and promoting socialization with the contribution of businesses with inventions, technical applications in natural disaster prevention and mitigation.

After listening to the reports and comments related to the application of science and technology in disaster prevention, the Deputy Minister emphasized that the application of science and technology must focus on forecasting, warning, respronding, overcoming and rebuild after natural disasters. Technology solutions need to focus on building database  about natural disaster, dyke, landslide, flood map, satellite images, real-time reservoir management and operation tool, etc.

The delegates exchanged and effectively discussed issues related to the application of science and technology in early warning of floods, flash floods, dike management, coastal erosion treatment technology, management real-time reservoir operation etc.
